“Sunflowers on Lipscomb”

Happy Wednesday my friends!

Sunflowers are a favorite flower to paint for so many artists and this one is loose, whimsical, with a bit of positive and negative space. I loved the offset nature of the reference.

This is about 8×8″ on Uart 500 grit paper with an alcohol wash. I have a large roll I purchased from Dakota Pastels . This allows me to cut and paint different sized pieces and is a very economical way to paint often!

I first began with my usual pencil sketch to place my main shapes and elements within the piece:

My simple block in of colors. I chose warm ochre for the underpainting within the flower area and a blue for the distant house peeking through:

And here it is washed in:

The first very messy and loose layers. I’m choosing *very* neutral greens for the foreground and also establishing the roofline (although also very loose!). Keeping everything here very fluid.

Beginning to build up more greens on the right of the painting and also bright values (and higher chroma) within the yellows of the flowers:

Brightening up the blue on the distant house!
