This piece was my final painting for my ocean themed month over on my Patreon and Youtube pages.  I painted this live via a private Youtube channel and it was marvelous to connect with students and artists all over the world!  I had people checking in from Spain, England, India, Australia, France, South Africa, and more! The magic of technology is amazing to me and I’m so grateful to have the ability to reach these wonderful far off places.

For my livestream paintings, I always do a color study or two before starting.  Similar to my workshops and demos, I want to be efficient with my time and also be able to show my palette throughout the process.  This is a bit different than how I work for my normal Monday videos I release (full lessons on Patreon that come out every Monday!).  Those are edited recorded episodes and with more of the taste of my natural ebb and flow to my working method.  I am mostly going off the cuff, experimenting, changing things up.  Each has its benefits and both work into my studio time.

In painting this scene, I utilized a Plein air painting I had painted from this gorgeous location near the bay in Hilo, Hawai’i.  We were there last summer when the volcano was erupting and had a little more than three glorious weeks to explore.  We’ve been to Hawai’i many times, having dear friends who live there and are gracious enough to let us crash at their home.

Paintings like this that have such memory are so precious to me.  Sometimes if a place is near and dear to my heart, I’m almost afraid to paint them for fear I won’t be able to capture the heart of the place.  Do you ever feel like that?

I have loved painting the ocean in the month of July!  Next up, Structures in the Landscape in August!  Won’t you join us and come and play?

xoxo

Really beautiful piece Bethany! I especially love the calmness and reflection across the water!
